Overview

The Mercedes-Benz R-Class is a six-passenger luxury sports tourer, combining the best qualities of a sports sedan and luxury sport utility vehicle. For 2008, the R-Class lineup includes the R350, R350 2WD and the diesel R320 CDI. The R-Class range offers agile handling and a balanced performance supported by standard all-wheel drive. Christened as a sports tourer, the vehicle features individual seating for six and versatile interiors ideal for traveling families and for hauling cargo. Mercedes-Benz offers a basic warranty of 48 months or 50,000 miles.

Power and Performance

The R350 is equipped with a 3.5-liter V-6 that develops 268 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. The R320 CDI produces 221 horsepower and 398 pound-feet of torque. All the engines are teamed with a seven-speed automatic. The R350 is now available with rear-wheel, as well as, all-wheel-drive models. The R-Class's fully independent suspension uses double wishbones in the front and a four-link setup at the rear. A load-leveling rear air suspension is standard. Three operating modes are available - Normal, Comfort or Sport. A new electronic gear selector is mounted on the steering column.

Body and Styling

The R-Class has the sleek, long look of a sports sedan in the front, while its round squat shape is reminiscent of a station wagon in the rear. All R-Class models have 18-inch wheels. Two kinds of sunroofs are optional: a conventional glass panel and a double-sized panoramic unit with a 5-foot, 7-inch glass panel and powered roller blinds. The interior is chic with leather inserts, brown bird's-eye maple wood trim, and a two-tone dashboard with large gauges that are well positioned and easy to read. The sport tourer offers comfortable seating for seven passengers courtesy of three rows of seating.

Safety Features

Standard safety features include side curtain air bags, door-mounted side-impact air bags for front occupants, rollover sensors, seat belt pretensioners, side curtain air bags, tire-pressure monitoring system, anti-lock brakes and an electronic stability program.
