The Mercedes-Benz GL-Class was introduced in 2007 as the company's first three-row, midsize luxury sport utility vehicle. It joins the SUV lineup alongside the five-passenger M-Class and the G-Class SUV. For 2008, a new GL550 flagship model with a bigger engine and distinctive styling joins the lineup. Three models are offered: the GL550, GL450 and GL320 CDI. The GL-Class models are quiet, offer a comfortable ride, and have responsive handling.
Power and Performance
The new GL550 receives a 382-horsepower V-8; the GL450 a 335-horsepower V-8; while the GL320 CDI features a 215-horsepower turbo-diesel V-6 engine. All models have a seven-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive without low-range gearing. An off-road package with low-range gearing, locking center, rear differentials, and driver-adjustable air suspension is optional.
Body and Styling
The GL550 features distinctive exterior styling that includes 21-inch AMG wheels, fender flares, chrome trim, blue-tinted glass, and a large Mercedes-Benz star on its signature grille. The GL-Class SUV is based on the same platform as the M-Class, but offers seating for seven; with the third row seat providing enough room for adults. Wood interior trim, heated front seats, and a power folding third row seat are standard. Standard on the GL550 and optional on other models are leather upholstery, a navigation system and rearview camera.
Safety Features
The GL-Class is loaded with front side air bags, and side curtain air bags that cover all seating rows, and include rollover deployment, load-limiting seat belts, anti-lock brakes, traction control and anti-skid control.
