For 2008, the Mercedes-Benz G-Class adds a new taillight design, improved gauges, a new steering wheel, rear-view camera and hands-free phone. The G500, a former military vehicle, features a new seven-speed automatic transmission. A unique chrome trim and "V8 Kompressor" badge highlight the G55 AMG. The Mercedes-Benz G-Class offers 52.5 inches in legroom, 45.2 cubic feet of cargo volume and a basic warranty of 48 months/50,000 miles.
Power and Performance
The G500 is powered by a 5.0-liter V-8 that produces 292 horsepower and 336 pound-feet of torque. A seven-speed automatic transmission sends the power to its four-wheel-drive system. The G55 AMG gets a supercharged 5.5-liter V-8 that delivers 469 horsepower at 516 pound-feet of torque, and is mated to a five-speed automatic. The G500 delivers an estimated 12 mpg in the city and 14 mpg on highways.
Body and Styling
The G-Class models are off-road machines, with boxy but imposing looks because of their size. The sport utility vehicle stands tall and has a rather distinctive utilitarian appearance with body-colored bumpers, rocker panels and a stainless-steel spare-tire cover. The cabin features leather and wood trim, power accessories, 10-way power front seats with three-position memory, a navigation system and Mercedes-Benz's tele-aid system. Larger vented-slotted front brakes, charcoal Nappa leather upholstery, AMG gauges and maple wood trim mark the G55 AMG.
Safety Features
Anti-lock brakes have electronic brake-force distribution and brake assistance for full-power, automatic braking in panic stops. Mercedes-Benz's electronic stability program and side curtain air bags are standard.
