Overview

The E-Class is Mercedes-Benz's midsize luxury sedan. The E320 Blue Tec joins the lineup, replacing the E320 CDI. The E-Class is available in sedan and wagon body styles, with rear-wheel or all-wheel-drive versions. The 2008 Mercedes-Benz E-Class adds a new AMG sport package that includes AMG front and rear aprons, 18-inch, five-spoke wheels, dual chrome exhaust, and an AMG steering wheel with shift paddles. Four models are offered: E550, E350, E320 Blue Tec and E63. The E-Class combines robust acceleration with fuel economy.

Power and Performance

The E350 is powered by a 268-horsepower, 3.5-liter V-6. The E550 receives a 382-horsepower V-8. The E320 Blue Tec (emission control technology) has a 208-horsepower V-6 turbo diesel, and the high-performance E63 is equipped with a 507-horsepower V-8. All rear-wheel-drive models are teamed with a seven-speed automatic transmission, while the AWD models have a five-speed automatic. The E63 gets manual-shift steering wheel buttons. An air suspension with driver-adjustable shock absorbers is standard on the E550 and E63. Mercedes' 4Matic AWD is available on the E350 and E550 models. Fuel economy is estimated at 12-23 mpg in the city and 18-32 mpg on the highway. The quiet and smooth E320 Blue Tec delivers an estimated and impressive 26 mpg in the city and 37 mpg on the highway.

Body and Styling

E-Class models are available as sedans, but the E350 and E63 are also available as wagons. AMG high-performance models have sleek styling and aggressive wheels. A sport package available on the E350 and E550 includes a lowered suspension, 18-inch wheels and a special trim. Stand-alone options include steering-linked bi-xenon headlamps, adaptive cruise control, a wireless cell phone link, navigation system, heated/cooled front seats, and keyless entry. Rear obstacle detection and a panorama glass roof with a power tilt/slide panel is available for sedans.

Safety Features

Standard safety features include the pre-safe collision mitigation system. Standard also are dual-stage air bags in the front, side-impact bags in the front and rear doors, and side curtain air bags that cover side windows. Anti-lock brakes, brake assist, electronic stability system and radar-based adaptive cruise control are also part of the safety system.
